Germany crosses 100 GW solar capacity mark

By the beginning of 2025, the total capacity of solar power plants in Germany exceeded 100 GW. According to the BSW Solar Association, the share of solar electricity produced in the country’s energy balance reached 14%, which is 12% more than in 2023. About 1 million new solar stations with a total peak capacity of 17 GW were installed during the year.

The main growth was provided by ground-mounted solar parks – their capacity increased by 40% compared to last year. Demand for small solar systems for balconies also continues to grow – their total capacity doubled to 0.7 GW. At the same time, the market for home solar power plants has slowed down somewhat, which creates challenges for PV companies operating in the private household market.

The German government plans to increase the installed solar capacity to 215 GW by 2030. However, to achieve this goal, it is necessary to reduce bureaucratic barriers and create more attractive conditions for investors. About two-thirds of German citizens want to expand solar technologies faster.

What does this mean for Ukraine?

Ukraine has significant potential for the development of solar energy, especially in the context of energy instability. Germany’s experience confirms that support for large-scale SPPs and accessible financial mechanisms can significantly accelerate the transition to renewable sources. The approximate amount of electricity produced by solar power plants in Ukraine is only about 10 GW. Based on these figures, our state and business (first of all) have room to strive to ensure greater energy independence.
